Mark Schwanda Leashes Bulldogs in MotM Performance

Sunday, October 3, 2021

The Vudoos and Bulldogs would not settle in to the game until about halfway through the first period, which is when the action picked up. The first action on the scoresheet was a fabulous Vudoos goal when Tom Thrun would draw first blood from Mike Cenatiempo and Tom "Godzilla" Godon. The Vudoos would then double their lead when Mark Schwanda, after receiving a pass from Captain Jim Schwanda, used his shifty moves to pull Bulldogs goalie Joseph Ursino out of his crease, before throwing the puck into the open slot, for a tap in by Ray "Ziesse's Peanut Butter Cup" Ziesse, for 2-0, which would hold going into the second period. The shot totals were 10-6 Bulldogs.

The second period would begin with the Vudoos going 3-0 up, after Mark Schwanda would fire in low. So far, Vudoos netminder Zach Godon wouldn't yield to the Bulldogs, but eventually he would be cracked when Joseph Ursino would go high from Mike Ciampi, for 3-1. But the Vudoos would respond with a highlight reel backhand when Mike "Mikey Jr." Cenatiempo would deke and lift in after Adam Kelly would lead him in on a breakaway. Now 4-1 Vudoos, they would go into the third period by that margin, now leading on shots at 16-14, after outshooting the Bulldogs 10-4 in the second period.

The Bulldogs would not go away without a fight, and would pull to 4-2 down when Phil Karnicki would kick off the third period, but a quick response by the Vudoos, Mike Cenatiempo from Adam Kelly and Mark Schwanda, would cancel that out. Now down 5-2, the Bulldogs would again bring it to a two goal deficit, this time when Ciampi would whack in a puck on a rebound from Anthony Ursino. With some momentum, the Bulldogs would come closer to down one when Colin McMullen would finish on a breakaway, but on the next shift, Mark Schwanda would restore the two goal lead, and some calmness for the Vudoos. Up 6-4, the Vudoos would grab the game by the scruff of its neck, and suck the life out of it, winning by that final, as each team finished with 16 shots.

The Stateside Tap + Tavern Man of the Match Award was won by Mark Schwanda (2G, 2A).
