Vudoo Score Five in Third Period to Clear Storm

Sunday, April 22, 2018

Last season's champion was having a rough start on their quest to repeat, with the Storm only picking up points in two shootout losses through their first three games, but they began well here when Pat Quinn assisted on their first goal. Quinn then followed this by tapping in from Jim Wilson, although the Storm could not triple their lead after James Woods-Corwin's trip put them on a power play. Invigorated after returning to the ice, Woods-Corwin got the Vudoo going with a low wrister, but like the Storm, when the Vudoo went on a power play, they could not extend their lead when Wilson went off for a slash. But unlike the Storm when they had a power play, the Vudoo were hit shorthanded when Tim "Bones" Jones broke through on a breakaway, getting the Storm some wiggle room, now up by two. The Vudoo entered the third period with a tough task ahead of them, but it got easier when Captain Gary Len was helped by Ray "Ziesse's Peanut Butter Cup" Ziesse, two minutes before Len and Ziesse got it to Brian MacLean, who tied it. Now 3-3, things got worse for the Storm when Bones' hook put him in the sin bin, but they stifled the Vudoo, who could not do much with their power play. It pressed on still tied, but the Vudoo broke through when Mark Schwanda fired a pass to Woods-Corwin for a one timer, and the Vudoo's first lead of the contest. Eventually, the Storm pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but this only led to Mark Schwanda scoring in the empty net. With 51 seconds remaining and now trailing 5-3, it looked over for the Storm, but Tom Quinn scored eight seconds after Schwanda's empty netter, resetting it for a frantic finish. Attacking as hard as they could, the Storm threatened, but ultimately, with four seconds left, Schwanda scored his second of the night (both in the empty net) for a 6-4 Vudoo win.

The Vudoo, after taking zero points in their first two games, have taken the maximum, six, in their next two games, sitting in second place, but with more games played than everyone else in Division III, after tonight's win over the Storm.

The Storm are going to have to figure out what is going on with their group: They only have two points after three games and are in eleventh (last) place. Back to the drawing board they go.

Mark Schwanda (2G, 1A) and James Woods-Corwin (2G) won the Hockey Haus Man of the Match Award.
