Vudoos Fall In Shoot Out

Friday, June 3, 2016

The Vudoo would need a win in this game to still have a chance at catching the Rats for first place, while the Rink Rats were hoping to pick up a few points to widen the gap between themselves and the Pterodactyls for fifth place. Tom Thrun scored four minutes into the game to make it 1-0 Vudoo, and captain Gary Len scored four minutes after that. Will Dimock added a goal before the period ended as Pete Peterson kept the Rink Rats off the board to make it 3-0 after the first.

The Rink Rats played strong defense in the second, preventing the Vudoo from expanding their lead. With a minute to go in the period, Chris Slocum broke Peterson's shutout to narrow the gap to two goals with one period remaining.

Two minutes into the third, rookie Rene Merghart scored a powerplay goal, thanks to Mike Mormile taking a roughing penalty, to regain the three-goal lead, but the Rink Rats were not done yet. Two minutes later, Nick Graham scored to make it 4-2, and just one minute later, captain Vincent Falcicchio brought his team back within one. With 7:40 to go, Merghart was sent off for interference, and this time the tables were turned as it was Mormile who scored during Merghart's penalty to tie the game for the Rink Rats. Neither team was able to score again in regulation, despite a Nick Grahm hooking penalty giving the Vudoo a powerplay, so this game would be decided by a shootout. Graham would go first in the shootout, but he was stopped by Peterson. The Vudoo sent tom Godon to take their first shot, but he was unsuccessful as well. In the second round, the Rink Rats went with Slocum, who scored, but Will Dimock followed suit to keep this shootout even through two rounds. In the third round, Falcicchio scored for the Rink Rats. The Vudoo needed George Dimock to score to keep their hopes alive, but he was unable to as the Rink Rats left the ice with the victory. They can clinch fifth place with a win over the Pterodactyls on Wednesday. For the Vudoo, only picking up one point in this game means they can no longer catch up to the Rats for first place. They are still in a highly-contested battle for second with the Biohazards and Puck Pimps though. A win over the Puck Pimps on Monday will clinch it for them.
