Vudoo Fall In Shoot Out

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

It has been over two months since the Pterodactyls have last seen a game that ended in victory and with this being the last game of the season for leading scorer Kyle Argent they would like to send him off on a high note with a win. The Vudoos had a three game winning streak snapped by the Shice-T and then lost a heart breaker in a shootout to the Puck Pimps and are hoping to get an easy victory over a soft target. When the puck was dropped the Vudoos hoped to get one on the board early and put the game on auto pilot but the Pterodactyls came out with a load of determination and refused to give up on an early flurry. The Pterodactyls weathered the storm and got a few quality chances of their own but the Vudoos would not bend and the first period came to an end with a pair of zeros still showing on the board.

The second period continued the goalie duel and defensive chess match. The Pterodactyls got caught on a bad change and the Vudoos made them pay as Mark Schwanda snapped the puck home to put the Vudoos up by one late in the second. The clock would run out on the middle period without any more scoring and the Pterodactyls entered the locker room with a one goal deficit.

The Vudoos looked to press their advantage early in the third and applied strong pressure but some timely saves by Jeff Leidner and some strong defensive help from Scott Brady lead to a three on one break for the Pterodactyls going the other way that ended with Kyle Argent putting the puck passed Pete Peterson and tying the game at one. With just over five minutes to go in regulation Brian MacLean found himself all alone at the back door and in perfect position to receive a pass from Gary Len and he slam dunked the puck home to put the Vudoo up 2-1. The Pterodactyls were not ready to admit defeat and Tony Gesumaria threw the puck to the center of the ice for Sean Caldwell to tip through the Vudoos goal keepers legs and once again the game was tied. Regulation would come to an end with the knot still in place and it would take extra innings to sort this contest out.

The Vudoos would get the first touch of the puck in the shoot out and Leidner would make a stop against MacLean to keep the pressure to a minimum. Geoff Grek would be the lead off man for the Pterodactyls but Peterson would shut the door on his attempt and keep it even at zero. George Dimock was next in line but could not find the back of the net on his shot and Argent would take the puck for the Pterodactyls. Channeling his inner Bobby Orr, he slid the puck under Peterson and took flight into the corner putting the Pterodactyls on top. Schwanda was in a do or die situation but could not beat Leidner and the Pterodactyls gave Argent a victory send off.
